Replacing cheap tile with ceramic tile in the kitchen?

I was wondering if I could just put down ceramic tile over top of the cheap tile that is in my kitchen now. The cheap tile that now is on now is that kind which I believe has a sticky backing to it and is real flimsy.
I basically have no idea what I am doing. I saw at lowes a brand called "Edge Precision Tile", that looks easy enough, does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Any web sites on how to tile a kithen would be handy too. thanks!

After having installed thousands of sq. ft. of tile, I suspect you have no recourse, if you want a quality job, than to remove the old vinyl.

By admitting you have no idea what you are doing you leave yourself open to valid suggestions, and shouldn't be mocked.

By that admittance however, you should seek actual help as much as advice.

There will be measuring that needs to be done, prepping the floor to install new "tile" Cutting in some cases, requiring proper tools. Proper tools to accomplish the install. Enough mortar, mixed in small batches to work only enough area you think you can manage. Places to put anything existing in that room covering any part of the floor. Patience and a commitment to finish. Choice of a type of tile, color, grout color, and the toopls, sponges, etc, to do the grout work. The time to let mortar set, then grout, letting that set as you clean up.

A French Summer Garden Party – A Celebration of hand made and hand decorated Ceramic Kitchen and Tableware!

 

We arrived at this lovely country house in the middle of the Drome Valley in the Provence to be greeted with a glass of water from the most gorgeous, hand crafted and hand decorated ceramic water jug. This ceramic water jug alone made us smile, it was so pretty and delicate and the water quenched our thirst on the 38 Celsius degree Summers day.

 

After a good look around the organic farm, we sat down at the long garden table with three different parties, a family from Paris, a couple from Normandy, my friends from New York and us from England.

 

First we were served hors d'oeuvres on colourful hand-made pottery dishes, plates and bowls alike. We all started chatting in French and English and felt immediately relaxed and comfortable and forgot about our rushed, non-stop city lives.

 

The main courses arrived in wonderful ceramic oven-to-table ware, handmade ceramic casseroles and other wonderful pottery items. All the ceramic serving dishes, wonderful deep red ceramic salad bowls, hand-made and hand-painted ceramic plates and bowls added to the enjoyment of the fabulous meal.

 

What a wonderful idea to use your own country house for special lunches for a bunch of strangers thrown together at a country table overlooking the lavender fields of the Provence. A peaceful, organic and friendly environment at its best.

 

The ceramic water jugs kept going around the table, the blues, creams, yellows and reds adding to the greens and other natural colours of these terrific pottery items. French kitchen and tableware at its best!

 

The food was just delicious and the family ‘hosting' the lunch seemed to have as much fun as their guests did. Apparently they do this once or twice a week during Spring and Summer and there can be no better way to earn a little extra money, delighting their ‘city' guests without charging them a fortune.

 

It was such a memorable last lunch on our trip to the Provence that it still sticks in our minds. The company was first class, in spite the fact that conversation was limited through language barriers but everybody tried their best and the four of us had the best ‘go away' lunch before departing back to the airport and to our busy lives.

 

After two years, we still remember the incredible surrounding, the peace of the place, the hospitality – and, of course, the hand-made, hand painted French kitchen and tableware. The lovely ceramic water jugs, ceramic bowls and plates, oven-to-table ware, dessert dishes, ceramic mocha cups or latte mugs.

 

A wonderful display of French country living.
